UNC Harvey Beech Scholarship

Harvey Beech was the first African-American student to graduate from UNC Chapel Hill’s Law School. This scholarship is awarded annually to five current Carolina students to be dispersed in the following academic year. Recipients are selected based on academic progression and GPA improvement. Contributions to campus life are also considered.

This scholarship is open to all UNC-Chapel Hill undergraduates (interested in pursuing a career in law), graduate/professional students, and first and second year Law students. Any applicant must plan to be enrolled at Carolina for academic year 2024-2025 in order to receive the scholarship funds.

Application materials will be reviewed by a selection committee composed of UNC professional staff and current undergraduate and graduate students. The winners of the scholarship are selected by this committee as well.

Scholarship Selection Guidelines

  1. The scholarship committee shall be composed of representatives of multiple student organizations and administrative units. The committee is led by the University Office for Diversity & Inclusion with the Office for Scholarships and Student Aid as an advisory partner.
  2. The scholarship committee shall determine the scholarship recipients based on (in order of importance): academic GPA improvement from within the previous academic year (semester or cumulative for one year), contributions to campus life, and demonstrate financial need (impact of scholarship). Scholarships shall be awarded in coordination with the Office for Scholarships and Student Aid.
  3. The Scholarship Committee shall award (5) scholarships in the amount of $2,500 each. The winners will include two current Carolina law students (1st Year and 2nd Year), two current Carolina graduate/professional students, and one current Carolina undergraduate student.
  4. Awardees will be honored in January at the Lecture and Awards Ceremony that is part of the annual MLK, Jr. Week of Celebration. Scholarship funds will be disbursed in two increments, with the first increment deposited in the fall semester of the following academic year.

2023 Harvey Beech Scholarship Recipients



Christopher Everett is a Senior from Clayton, North Carolina. He is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy with a minor in Media and Journalism. Everett is actively involved in Student Government at Carolina and currently serves as the Student Body President. Everett is an Honors Carolina student.




Aliyah Griffith is a Ph.D. candidate from the Caribbean. She is pursuing her doctorate in Marine Sciences. Griffith believes in giving back to the community and is the Treasurer of the Black Graduate and Professional Student Association.





Jessica Holloway is a Senior from Burtonsville, Maryland. She is pursuing her Bachelors in Neuroscience and Health Policy & Management. Holloway is the Vice President of Queen In You Chapel Hill Chapter which is an organization dedicated to mentoring young girls of color and giving back to our community.
