Project Uplift


Project Uplift is a special program that enables high-achieving rising high school seniors to experience college life on the Carolina campus. Students spend two days visiting classes, meeting with faculty and staff, interacting with Carolina students, and participating in cultural and social activities. During May and June, approximately 1,000 rising seniors and other secondary students participate in this unique early recruitment program. Project Uplift is scheduled for May 24-26, May 31-June 2, June 7-9, and June 14-16.

Community Counselor (CC)

Thee Project Uplift Community Counselor is a vital member of the Project Uplift team who – under the supervision and direction of the Project Uplift Coordinator and Director – serves as a counselor and positive role model for Project Uplift Participants. Community Counselors will be responsible for facilitating wellness and student life sessions using techniques learned through training seminars. Community counselors must also facilitate successful transitions of students between sessions and monitor students during evening hours. Additionally, Community Counselors engage participants in meaningful discussions about college and encourage them to pursue post-secondary education.

Resident Counselor (RC) 

The Project Uplift Resident Counselor is a vital member of the Project Uplift team who – under the supervision and direction of the Project Uplift Coordinator and Director – serves as a counselor and positive role model for what it means to live and learn in a diverse college environment.  The Resident Counselor will be responsible for creating a positive, constructive living/learning environment and will be responsible for monitoring students during evening hours. Additionally, Resident Counselors communicate information regarding the Project Uplift program, engage participants in meaningful discussions about college, and assist participants in connecting with peers. Resident Counselors must assist participants with residence hall needs, interact with participants and help with transitions to and from sessions as well as overnight.

Activity Counselor (AC) 

The Project Uplift Activity Counselor is a vital member of the Project Uplift team who – under the supervision and direction of the Project Uplift Coordinator and Director – serves as a resource, facilitator, and positive role model for Project Uplift Participants. Activity Counselors must monitor students during all academic and enrichment activities and lead class visits and information session.  Activity Counselors will be responsible for facilitating the overall experience of a small group of Project Uplift Participants by creating and implementing inclusive activities that enhance the academic experience and promote higher education. Activity Advisors will work with Project Uplift to empower participants to engage in Project Uplift’s co-curricular experiences. Activity Counselors are the front-line staff members and must assist participants in learning more about UNC based on their knowledge and involvement in the University while also creating an environment where students can live, learn, and thrive.

Uplift PLUS


Uplift PLUS (UP) is a five-week program that takes place during Carolina’s Summer Session II. High-achieving Project Uplift participants are selected based on their outstanding Project Uplift applications. During the program, participants live on campus, attend SAT/ACT coaching sessions, and take English 100 (3 credits). To further expand participants’ knowledge of different academic and career fields, Uplift PLUS students gain exposure to units across the campus community. Uplift PLUS will be held from June 24-July 27, 2018.

In addition to serving as daily program advisors, UP staff members serve as tutors and program facilitators.

Uplift PLUS Counselor 

The Uplift PLUS Counselor is a vital member of the Uplift PLUS team who – under the supervision and direction of the Director of Student Engagement and Recruitment Programs Coordinator – serves as an academic tutor, resource, facilitator, and positive role model for Project Uplift Participants. Counselors must monitor students during all academic and enrichment activities and lead class visits and information session. Counselors will be responsible for creating a positive, constructive living/learning environment and will be responsible for monitoring students during evening hours. Additionally, Counselors communicate information regarding the Uplift PLUS program, engage participants in meaningful discussions about college, and assist participants in connecting with peers. Counselors must assist the Uplift PLUS coordinator with planning and implementing weekly activities. Counselors must assist with transitions to and from sessions, classes, meals and recreation activities and must assist participants with residence hall needs. Counselors must serve as English tutors and provide support during study hall hours.

North Carolina Renaissance


The North Carolina Renaissance (NCR) program invites rising juniors from rural communities for an educational four-day enrichment program. The objective of the program is to inspire high-achieving scholars to pursue their educational aspirations while developing unique leadership skills. NCR will be held from July 18-21, 2018. 

NCR Counselor

Additionally, Counselors communicate information regarding the NCR program, engage participants in meaningful discussions about college, and assist participants in connecting with peers. Counselors must assist with transitions to and from sessions, classes, meals and recreation activities. Counselors are the front-line staff members and must assist participants in learning more about UNC based on their knowledge and involvement in the University while also creating an environment where students can live, learn, and thrive.
