UNC Harvey Beech Scholarship

Harvey Beech was the first African-American student to graduate from UNC Chapel Hill’s Law School. This scholarship is awarded annually to three current Carolina students to be dispersed in the following academic year. Recipients are selected based on academic progression and GPA improvement. Contributions to campus life are also considered.

This scholarship is open to all UNC-Chapel Hill sophomores, juniors, and graduate/professional students. Any applicant who is a graduate/professional student must plan to be enrolled at Carolina for academic year 2023-2024 in order to receive the scholarship funds.

Application materials will be reviewed by a selection committee composed of UNC professional staff and current undergraduate and graduate students. The winners of the scholarship are selected by this committee as well.

Scholarship Selection Guidelines

1. The scholarship committee shall be composed of representatives of multiple student organizations and administrative units. The committee is led by the University Office for Diversity & Inclusion with the Office for Scholarships and Student Aid as an advisory partner.
2. The scholarship committee shall determine the scholarship recipients based on (in order of importance): academic GPA improvement from within the previous academic year (semester or cumulative for one year), contributions to campus life, and demonstrate financial need (impact of scholarship). Scholarships shall be awarded in coordination with the Office for Scholarships and Student Aid.
3. The Scholarship Committee shall award (3) scholarships in the amount of $1,500 each. The winners will include one current Carolina sophomore, one current Carolina junior, and one current Carolina graduate/professional student.
4. Awardees will be honored in January at the Lecture and Awards Ceremony that is part of the annual MLK, Jr. Week of Celebration. Scholarship funds will be disbursed in two increments, with the first increment deposited in the fall semester of the following academic year.

2021 Harvey Beech Scholarship Recipients

AMY MADRIGAL

Amy Madrigal is a sophomore from High Point, North Carolina. She was recently accepted into the radiologic science program and is excited to begin. Amy is a first-generation college student and is extremely grateful for her parents’ support to reach this point. She is also part of Jump Ahead, an organization that helps to teach elementary school children about healthy lifestyles through the use of jump ropes, and fun and healthy recipes. In addition, Amy is a member of CUBA’s films committee, the Buckley Public Service Scholars program, and UNC HOSA. She is very thankful to receive this scholarship and hopes to do well in her upcoming years at Carolina!

SHERROD CRUM

Sherrod Crum is a sophomore from Atlanta, Georgia, majoring in Business Administration with a minor in Social & Economic Justice. He is very involved both on-campus and within the community in the areas of education access, social entrepreneurship, and career preparation. Currently, he serves as the Chief Executive Officer for Mission: Scholarship, a 501(c)3 initiative designed to bridge the access gap to college and scholarship application resources for underserved students. Additionally, he is currently one of the Co-Founders and President for The Black Entrepreneur Initiative at UNC, a student-led organization that cultivates a network and community for current and aspiring Black Entrepreneurs on Carolina’s campus. He also serves as the only African American male Career Peer Counselor with the University Career Services office at Carolina, assisting Carolina’s undergraduate and graduate students with Resume & Cover Letter Development, Interview Preparation, and more.

Aside from Sherrod’s roles in various organizations, he is currently a member of the Eship Scholars inaugural Cohort, a program that supports the entrepreneurial journeys of students from underrepresented backgrounds. He is also a member of the Kenan Scholars program within the Kenan-Flagler Business School that focuses on utilizing business to serve the public and conduct research. This upcoming summer, Sherrod will be interning with The Boston Consulting Group in their Houston office. He is hoping to utilize his consulting experience to further his ventures long-term and continue to cultivate change in the community. Most importantly, he is excited to uphold the legacy of Harvey Beech and continue to advocate for marginalized communities of color.

GRACE STEVENS

Grace Stevens is a junior from Mount Holly, North Carolina, majoring in Business Administration and minoring in Environmental Science and Studies. Some of her accomplishments include being a Dean’s List Recipient in fall 2019 (and would have also been in Spring 2020 and Fall 2020, if CV wasn’t a thing), as well as a Buckley Public Service Scholar. During her time at Carolina, she has been involved in various activities, including the Minority Student Business Alliance, where she serves as the club’s Secretary, Carolina Women in Business, and Carolina Housing, for which she is a Resident Advisor. She has also worked for a non-profit as a Racial Equity Coordinator, where she focused on ways the organization can center and uplift underrepresented communities and experiences through their educational programming. In addition, she’s had the privilege to be an Orientation Leader in 2020, as well as a mentor for the Minority Advising Program, the MAC Mentorship Program, and the Allison Mentorship Program…all of which allow her to connect with other students and share my lived experiences while learning from others. She is on an Organizational Equity research team at Kenan-Flagler Business School, where she researches various topics surrounding Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Workplace, and she hopes to continue this work.

This summer, she has an internship with Ernst & Young as a Launch Intern in their financial services and she is looking forward to gaining more experiences that will potentially shape her path. She is grateful to receive this scholarship and hopes to continue the legacy that Harvey Beech has set by continuing to pursue equity in all spaces.
