Workshop & Conversation: Towards Equity and Success for Latinx Students

As part of the Latinx Heritage Month celebrations, Diversity & Inclusion brings to campus Cristóbal Rodríguez, Ph.D., director of Graduate Studies, School of Education, Howard University and associate professor of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, on October 8, 2018 from 9 – 11 a.m. in Pleasants Room, Wilson Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Rodríguez will address critical issues impacting Latinx students and facilitate campus-wide dialogue to support and advance strategies for Latinx student success. The conversation and workshop will provide space for participants to ask questions, share practices, and connect with units and individuals across the institution and beyond who are involved in supporting access, opportunity, and retention for Latinx students at Carolina.

About the Speaker: Dr. Rodríguez’ research focus centers around concentrated diverse demographics and explores the variation of policy development, implementation, and results and their influence on access throughout the educational pipeline. Prior to residing at Howard University, Dr. Rodriguez spent five years at his B.A. and M.A. degreed alma mater of New Mexico State University as an assistant professor of Educational Leadership and Administration. Dr. Rodríguez received his Ph.D. in Educational Policy & Planning at The University of Texas at Austin in 2009, with an emphasis on education research, evaluation, and policy analysis with a social and cultural historical focus. Prior to his doctoral studies, Dr. Rodriguez has worked in high school and university settings, enhancing college access and success for diverse students. Dr. Rodriguez’ worldview and research have been shaped significantly by having been born and raised in the Texas Borderlands of El Paso to hard-working immigrant parents from Mexico and studying in Germany as a U.S. Congress-German Bundestag scholar.

About Latinx Heritage Month at Carolina: Latinx Heritage Month, celebrated annually from September 15-October 15, is highlighted at Carolina through a variety of departmental and student-sponsored events. These include artist meet and greets, dinners, open houses, receptions, and more.
