Screening & Discussion: “Raising Bertie”
November 3, 2017 @ 5:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Dr. Cedric M. Bright, the Office of Special Programs and the Zollicoffer Committee will present a screening of the documentary “Raising Bertie.“ The film intimately follows three African-American boys as they face a precarious coming of age in rural Bertie County, North Carolina. Like many rural areas, Bertie County struggles with a dwindling economy, a declining population, and a high school graduation rate below the state average. With UNC School of Medicine’s renewed commitment to recruiting, training and graduating the new cohort of North Carolina’s rural physicians, the Zollicoffer Committee wanted to bring attention to the many political, social and economic problems that these rural communities face on a daily basis. The discussion afterwards will allow us to investigate meaningful solutions to address barriers to care in order to improve the overall health of these communities.
The event will take place on Friday, November 3rd from 5:00 – 8:30 PM at Medical Biomolecular Research Building (MBRB) in Chapel Hill, NC.
