Representation Matters: Addressing the Latinx Leadership Crisis in Higher Education

October 29, 2020 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

the Consortium on Race, Gender & Ethnicity will present “Representation Matters: Addressing the Latinx Leadership Crisis in Higher Education.” The event will be led by Professor Michelle Espino, Associate Professor, Department of Counseling, Higher Education & Special Education, University of Maryland, College Park

Discussants will include:

  • Marie Mora, Provost & Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, University of Missouri – St. Louis
  • Deborah Santiago, CEO, Excelencia

The goal of the seminar is to have a conversation on the increasing shifting demographics in higher education, colleges and universities, and the preparation required to engage in equitable practices that foster persistence and success for all groups, but most critically, Latinx/a/o student, faculty, and administrators. This presentation seeks to highlight major national and local issues that disproportionately hinder access to senior leadership roles for traditionally and historically underrepresented faculty and administrators. We plan to invite a national audience that will include scholars, researchers, practitioners, community members, policy makers and students.

The intent is to engage in a difficult conversation on how to address Latinx/a/o social inequalities and inequity in higher education: who is being included, who is being left out of the higher education opportunity structure and who is missing from the leadership landscape and who is in those leadership roles. The format will be 45 minutes for a presentation, 15 minutes for each discussant and 30 minutes for Q&A.
