Rebuilding Community: A Dialogue with our Peers

October 22, 2018 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

The Department of African, African American and Diaspora Studies, the Institute of African American Research, and the Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History will host a dialogue on the way forward in light of recent events concerning the statue known as Silent Sam. A panel of speakers from other institutions will share their experiences with community (re)building and reconciliation on campuses dealing with universities’ racial histories. Panelists will engage audience members as active participants in a dialogue that will ultimately consider where we, at Carolina, go from here. All are welcome to attend.

  • Dr. Deborah McDowell, director, Carter G. Woodson Center, and member of Commission on Slavery and the University, University of Virginia
  • Dr. Marcia Chatelain, associate professor of History and member of Working Group on Slavery, Memory, and Reconciliation, Georgetown University
