IAAR Brown Bag Talk: “Black Nativity & Birth Outcomes”

November 13, 2017 @ 12:45 pm - 1:45 pm

Ph.D. student Yanica Faustin (Gillings School of Global Public Health, Maternal and Child Health) will speak on “Black Nativity & Birth Outcomes” at the next IAAR Graduate Student Summer Research Grant Brown Bag Talk. She is one of the recipients of the Institute of African American Research’s Summer 2017 Graduate Student Summer Research Grant.

While public health studies have paid close attention to disparities in birth outcomes between White and Black infants, there are few studies on disparities in adverse birth outcomes within the Black population, particularly between African Americans and Black immigrants. Addressing this gap in the literature, doctoral student Yanica Faustin will share the results of her qualitative and quantitative research with Black American and Black immigrant mothers. She will discuss the potential role that perceived racial discrimination and maternal health behaviors play in birth outcome disparities between the two groups.

A Q&A follows.

Free and open to the public.
