“Hidden Figures” – Bringing Math, Physics, Race & History to Hollywood

November 9, 2017 @ 7:30 pm

Rudy Horne (associate professor, Morehouse College) will discuss “Hidden Figures: Bringing Math, Physics, Race and History to Hollywood.” Horne was a mathematics consultant on the Hidden Figures film.

The movie tells the story of three African-American women mathematicians and engineers (Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson and Dorothy Vaughan) – who would play a pivotal role in John Glenn’s successful orbit around the Earth and the NASA missions to the moon.

Horne will give a brief review of the space race going on at the time between the United States and the former Soviet Union. He will discuss the lives and contributions that Johnson, Jackson and Vaughan made to the space race and his experiences of consulting for this film.
