Documenting Gravel Springs, Mississippi, in the 1970s

February 25 @ 5:30 pm

Exhibition opening with lecture by Cheryl Thurber. Performance by Rising Star Fife & Drum

During the 1970s and 1980s, historian and photographer Cheryl Thurber traveled through the South, documenting African-American communities, musicians and musical traditions, including in the small town of Gravel Springs, Mississippi. This opening celebrates a new exhibition of thirty prints from the Cheryl Thurber Photographic Collection in the Southern Folklife Collection at the Wilson Special Collections Library. Thurber will discuss her documentary field work and answer questions. The evening will conclude with a musical performance by Rising Star Fife and Drum in the tradition that Thurber documented. Cosponsored by the American Studies department and the Center for the Study of the American South.
