The Diaspora Festival of Black and Independent Film presents a screening of several short films during their Lunch & a Movie Series. Please click the link below to RSVP. If you do so at least 24 hours in advance, free lunch will await you!
The screenings include:
- The Big Chop – (16-minute short narrative) This film follows 10-year-old Kris on her natural hair journey of self-love and acceptance. Once a die-hard lover of her big Afro, negative hints from her mom and teasing on the playground cause Kris to get a perm. She continue to perm her hair as an adult until one day she finally has had enough. She looks in the mirror, and does the “big chop.” What follows after the chop is a pure emotional roller coaster.
- Modern Dark – (6-minute short narrative) This film focuses on a young man living in the inner city, whose notions of space and understanding of his place in the universe are informed primarily by online videos and clouded by science fiction.
- Lemonade Mafia – (10-minute short comedy) Kira’s Organic lemonade dynasty becomes jeopardized when newcomer Shantel Osgood sets up an extremely successful competing pink lemonade stand that encroaches into her territory. It is an all-out neighborhood war amongst the young girls in a good-natured battle of wills between competing kid entrepreneurs in this light-hearted comedy for all ages.
