CWC’s Carolina Seminar – Gender and Research

The Carolina Women’s Center will host their Carolina Seminar – Gender and Research, co-sponsored by the UNC School of Graduate Studies and Women’s and Gender Studies.

This Carolina Seminar will feature UNC graduate students who received funding from the Carolina Women’s Center to support their gender-based dissertation research projects.


  • Melissa Dollman, Department of American Studies
    Dissertation Title: Changing Lanes: A Reanimation of Shell Oil’s Carol Lane 
    This project explores a mid-twentieth-century public relations program that targeted women motorists and had as its spokesperson the “living trademark,” Carol Lane.
  • Pallvai Gupta, Department of Geography
    Dissertation Title: Geographies of Racial Capitalism: A case study of Swachh Rail (Clean Railways)
    Pallavi critiques the Clean Railway campaign in India and inquiries into the discourse of cleanliness.
  • Barbara Sostaita, Department of Religious Studies, with certificate in Women’s Gender Studies
    Dissertation Title: Sanctuary Everywhere: Fugitive Care on the Migrant Trail
