Crucial Discussions Series with Mab Segrest

November 15, 2017 @ 7:00 pm

The Sonja Haynes Stone Center will present Crucial Discussions Series with activist, educator, and author Mab Segrest. Segrest will speak on “Administrations of Lunacy: Reflections on Race, Psychiatry and Georgia’s State Mental Hospital.” The talk will examine the history of Georgia’s state mental facility at Milledgeville over its 170 year span and its wild, tragic, sometimes funny individual narratives. It highlights a much larger story about the nexus of US psychiatry with white settler colonialism whose effects resonate over eras and decades into our current moment.

Mab Segrest has worked for 35 years as a teacher, scholar and activist on issues of social justice in the South and nationally. Her book, Memoir of a Race Traitor, documents work against Klan and neo-Nazi movements with North Carolinians Against Racist and Religious Violence. She served as Chair and Professor of Gender and Women’s Studies at Connecticut College in New London from 2002 to 2014 and lived in North Carolina from 1972 to 2002. She is currently a Fellow at the National Humanities Center.
