Campus Y Safe Space and Statement Preparation
April 26 @ 6:00 pm
As members of Campus Y, we want to address acts of violence targeted at marginalized groups in the United States and in North Carolina. In one week, we saw the deaths of two Black transgender women Jaida Peterson and Remy Fennel in Charlotte, anti-trans gender-affirming care legislation in the NC General Assembly, the murders of Daunte Wright, Adam Toledo, and Ma’Khia Bryant through police violence, the Derek Chauvin trial and the violence against the Sikh community in Indianapolis.
As the Campus Y, an organization dedicated to social justice and the right of everyone to live their own authentic life free from the threat of violence, we condemn these actions. We want to uplift these stories and give resources to students who are processing and affected by this violence.
We will use the first half of the session as a space for people to process their emotions around these events. During the second half of the event, we will take time to brainstorm and craft a statement together. The purpose of this community statement is to truly honor the varied experiences of our community members these past few weeks. This statement will be shared on traditional Campus Y channels, such as our social media and listserv, for broader viewing. Finally, we will share resources at the end of the event to help with further healing and processing.
