July 11, 2019

Achieving Carolina Excellence (ACE) is a program designed to assist first year and transfer students from underrepresented populations with their transition to Carolina. ACE provides incoming students with the tools needed to ensure their academic, social and emotional success at Carolina.

By participating in ACE, students will:

  • Move into their residence hall early;
  • Engage in sessions designed to spark academic curiosity, encourage multiculturalism and facilitate the enhancement of strong cultural identity and positive self-esteem
  • Gain early and direct access to various campus resources and support services
  • Participate in the ACE Welcome Dinner and keynote
  • Engage with upper-class students, faculty, and staff

This year’s session will take place Thursday, August 15 to Saturday, August 17. In addition, special sessions will be held for parents/families on Thursday, August 15.

The ACE Legacy Leader is a volunteer who – under the supervision and direction of the Recruitment Programs Specialist – serves as a counselor and positive role model for ACE participants. Legacy Leaders will be responsible for facilitating Tar Heels Talk sessions using techniques learned through training seminars. Legacy Leaders must also facilitate successful registration and transitions of students between sessions and assist with necessary logistics. Additionally, Legacy Leaders engage participants in meaningful discussions about their college journey and encourage them to access campus resources for success at UNC.

Legacy Leaders will volunteer Wednesday, August 14th through Saturday, August 17th and will be granted early move-in to campus on Tuesday, Wednesday 13th. The time commitment for a Legacy Leader will be 5-8 hours per day. There is also the opportunity to be apart of the ACE planning committee, the planning committee will work virtually from Mid July up until ACE to help plan aspects of ACE. During ACE, the planning committee will help lead activities and organize Legacy Leaders.
