The Carolina Latinx Center has announced plans for the 2021 Latinx Heritage Month celebration. The national recognition of the month is Hispanic Heritage Month, but at UNC Chapel Hill, we have named the celebration Latinx Heritage Month to be more inclusive of the experiences and identities of our students, staff and community. Our annual month is four weeks of programming is a multicultural, and collaborative effort planned and coordinated by students, faculty and staff and is intended to invite our university community to learn, celebrate, and honor the important presence of Latin American immigrants and their descendants in the U.S.
This year’s theme is “Heels Pa’lante.” Pa’lante is a Spanish slang term that combines the words “para adelante,” meaning moving forward. This theme focuses on how our community learns to move forward from pandemics, from missed opportunities, and from hardships; and uses those roadblocks as lessons for a brighter future.
Events include keynote speaker Julian Castro (Mayor of San Antonio, TX and former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under President Obama), film screenings, panel discussion, a workshop, Carnaval and more.
