All graduating students are invited to participate in Carolina’s spring 2019 commencement ceremony (May 12, 9 a.m. at Kenan Memorial Stadium). However, there are additional celebrations open to students with unique affinities. Students wishing to participate in these ceremonies may register on the links below.

Hosted by the LGBTQ Center, Lavender Graduation is a commencement ceremony honoring Sexuality Studies minors, graduating LGBTIQA+ identified students, and their allies. We celebrate and acknowledge the achievements and contributions that students of all sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions have made. Recipients of the LGBTIQA+ Advocacy Award are announced during the ceremony. A catered reception will follow.

UMOJA: A Celebration of Black Graduates

The Black Student Movement and the Carolina Black Caucus will again host Umoja, a graduation ceremony in celebration of Black undergraduate and graduate students who have added so much to the Carolina community. This is a time when we intentionally honor the academic achievement of those who identify as Black in their senior year of undergraduate education at UNC. There will be cultural performances, a keynote speaker and a segment honoring black students as they receive their stoles (made of Kente cloth) onstage.

May 9, 1-3 p.m., Sonja Haynes Stone Center

Hosted by the Latinx Center, all graduating students (undergraduate and graduate/professional, including December graduates), faculty and staff are invited to attend the annual ¡Éxitos!

Latinx Graduation Ceremony and Recognition Reception. This bilingual event serves to celebrate the work and dedication that students have devoted to the Latinx community. Students do not have to identify as Latinx to participate. Following tradition, all participating students will receive a unique ¡Éxitos! Latinx stole as a small token of appreciation for their commitment.

Families and friends will have the opportunity to connect with the people who have guided the graduating students on their Carolina journey, take pictures with Rameses, and enjoy Latinx-inspired cuisine. We will also live stream the event on Facebook.

May 10, 5:30-7:30 p.m., FedEx Global Center (301 Pittsboro Street)

Graduating military-affiliated graduate and professional students are invited to participate in the Red, White, and Carolina Blue Graduation ceremony. We also encourage our current military-affiliated graduate students to attend to celebrate their fellow students’ accomplishments. The program includes the presentation of color and our National Anthem, remarks from students and administrators and the presentation of Military Honor Cords.

Light refreshments will be served. Dress is business casual or uniform optional (service dress/Class A).
