The University Office for Diversity and Inclusion is pleased to announce that Gretchen C. Bellamy has been named Senior Director for Education, Operations and Initiatives, effective June 18. Gretchen has a robust background in advising organizations on the transformation of their diversity and inclusion strategies.
As a Senior Strategist for Walmart Inc.’s Global Office of Culture, Diversity and Inclusion, she developed and implemented global culture, diversity, and inclusion strategies that transformed and drove the company’s culture and that embedded diversity and inclusion as integral components for supporting the company’s business operations and its 2.2 million employees. Gretchen also served as Assistant General Counsel in the Legal Operations Group for Walmart, where she advised regarding global internal and external diversity and inclusion, and attorney talent development in the legal department as well as served as an internal consultant for 3,000 compliance, ethics, and global security associates.
Prior to that, she was Director of International Pro Bono and Public Interest Programs at the University of Miami School of Law and was an attorney for corporate and commercial groups at Smith Anderson Blount Dorsett Mitchell & Jernigan, LLP in Raleigh.
In her new role, Gretchen will oversee the Inclusive Student Excellence outreach and retention programs, as well as operations of the office. “Gretchen brings the skills, experience and understanding for alignment with the team as we move forward with innovative and groundbreaking initiatives,” says Associate Vice Chancellor and Chief Diversity Officer Dr. G. Rumay Alexander. “She will be a value add as we continue our work towards making the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill a ‘Carolina for all.’”
Gretchen earned a J.D., LL.M. in International and Comparative Law from Duke University School of Law and a B.A. in International Relations from the University of Delaware.
